A-Level Chemistry Tutor: Lessons from Qualified Teachers

An A-level chemistry tutor from Priority Education: where marks go on the AQA papers, what weekly lessons do, and how Year 12 differs from Year 13.

An A-level chemistry tutor from Priority Education is a qualified, experienced science teacher who teaches a one-hour weekly lesson, with two a week recommended in Years 12 and 13. The site says it teaches students “locally, Nationally and Internationally”, with Revision Booster days before key exams.

What does an A-level chemistry tutor from Priority Education do?

An A-level chemistry tutor from Priority Education teaches a one-hour weekly lesson that works through the A-level chemistry content alongside exam skills and exam questions. The site says its tutors are qualified and experienced teachers, and the business is directed by Louise Finn and Steven Finn, who have each taught science for over 15 years, in roles including Head of Science (Louise) and Deputy Headteacher (Steven).

The site describes the science lessons as suited to all abilities, from students who need support to those “needing to be challenged to reach top grades”. It recommends that A-level students in Years 12 and 13 attend twice a week where possible, to cover twice as much content with time left to practise exam questions. Home-educated students are welcome, and the site says it can teach to any exam board’s curriculum.

Where do students lose marks in A-level chemistry?

Marks in A-level chemistry are hardest to earn on the parts of the course that do not reward memory alone: calculations, practical analysis and the multiple-choice section of the final paper. The structure of the AQA course shows the weighting: Paper 3 carries 30 marks of multiple choice and 40 marks on practical techniques and data analysis, which is 70 of its 90 marks.

Physical chemistry is the other pressure point. On AQA, Paper 1 combines physical and inorganic chemistry, and Paper 2 combines physical and organic chemistry, so a shaky grasp of the physical topics costs marks on both papers. Three common losses are students who can recite a mechanism but cannot apply it to an unfamiliar molecule; students who drop significant-figure and unit marks in multi-step calculations; and students who describe a practical they have done rather than the one the question asks about. All three can be improved with marked practice on real exam questions, which is what the lessons are built around.

If your child sits a different board, tell the tutor on the call; lessons follow the specification your child is entered for.

What do the weekly A-level chemistry lessons cover?

Weekly A-level chemistry lessons cover the core content of the course plus exam skills and technique, taught “little and often” across the year. Each lesson is one hour, and the site says the best exam progress comes from students who commit to regular lessons over a longer period.

Content is applied to exam questions in the same hour, so the method and the mark scheme are learned together. Priority Education also runs Exam Question Workshops, aimed at students who understand the content but struggle to score on the paper; the site says these give “lots of exposure to how the exam questions are phrased and how best to tackle them”.

How is Year 12 different from Year 13 for chemistry tuition?

In Year 12, A-level chemistry tuition lays the physical chemistry foundations that both AQA Paper 1 and Paper 2 draw on, and begins the inorganic and organic strands. In Year 13 the focus shifts to the second-year content and to the three-paper exam itself, including Paper 3’s multiple choice and practical analysis.

The Year 12 to 13 summer matters. Priority Education’s summer-holiday sessions for students entering Year 13 in September 2026 were advertised as two hours of A-level chemistry a week, mixing Year 12 content and exam questions with a start on Year 13 topics. In Year 13 the Revision Booster calendar lists A-level chemistry for Mock 2 Prep in January and February and Pre-exam Warmups in May and June.

Are there A-level chemistry revision days?

Priority Education’s Revision Boosters include A-level chemistry: four-hour days running 9:30 to 11:30 and 12:30 to 14:30 that cover key exam content and exam skills before mocks or final exams.

The published calendar lists A-level biology, chemistry and maths Boosters in July, August, January to February (Mock 2 Prep) and May to June; the October to November Mock 1 Prep is listed for GCSE subjects only. The site asks parents to book in advance because the pre-exam sessions are especially popular.

How many lessons a week does A-level chemistry need?

Priority Education recommends two one-hour lessons a week for A-level chemistry students in Years 12 and 13, where possible. One lesson a week is the alternative, and the site’s own view is that the best progress comes from regular lessons over a longer period.

Which is right depends on the starting point and the date. A Year 12 student keeping pace may be fine with one; a Year 13 student whose January mock is well below target may need two. Say so on the call and the teacher will advise.

Is the tuition online, and does it cover my exam board?

Priority Education’s site says it teaches “students locally, Nationally and Internationally” and can provide tuition “on all exam board curriculum”, but it does not say which lessons are online and which are in person, so the format is confirmed on the free call. Students in the Teesside area can ask about local lessons; see GCSE and A-level tutors in Teesside.

Bring the specification code to the call (AQA’s A-level chemistry is 7405) so lessons follow the right papers from the first week. For the habits that carry up from GCSE, see how to revise GCSE chemistry.

What does an A-level chemistry tutor cost?

Priority Education does not publish prices; lesson times and prices are discussed on the free call-back. Ask how A-level chemistry groups are arranged, since group size affects the cost per child.
